Resources About Chemistry For Kids

Everything that you can touch, taste or smell is made up of chemicals. Chemistry is the science that studies the building blocks of all matter. It also studies the changes that happen to these building blocks.

Biochemistry studies chemical reactions that are happening all the time in your body, and in other living things. Plastics, and other chemicals that come from oil, are a part of Organic Chemistry. Chemists search for new medicines to treat and prevent illnesses, they investigate food to find out what is good for you and what isn’t, they also develop new cosmetics, detergents, and fireworks!

Chemistry on The Free Resource aims to explain important chemical concepts in a clear and structured way. Above all, chemistry is fun, and we will also describe simple experiments that can be done in your kitchen or garden!

Cellular Respiration and ATP Production Facts for Kids

Most people associate respiration with the process of breathing to take in oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the body. Cellular respiration is the process of producing ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and NADH to fuel cell processes. There are two types of cellular respiration: Aerobic respiration uses oxygen to make energy. Anaerobic respiration does not use oxygen to make energy. Any of the macronutrients – proteins, carbohydrates, and fats – […]

Facts about Atoms for Kids

The atom is a basic unit of matter that consists of a dense central nucleus surrounded by a cloud of negatively charged electrons. The atomic nucleus contains a mix of positively charged protons and electrically neutral neutrons. An atom is classified according to the number of protons and neutrons in its nucleus: the number of protons determines the chemical element, and the number of neutrons determines the […]

The Science Behind How Hot Air Balloons Work

Hot air balloons and blimps are able to fly because the gases used have several different physical characteristics. These gases can change with differing temperatures, and the density of the gas fluctuates. This gives the balloon or blimp buoyancy, or the ability to float. Helium and other gases have lower molecular weights that force them upward, through the denser […]

Facts about Electrons for Kids

An electron has no known components or substructure; in other words, it is generally thought to be an elementary particle. The antiparticle of the electron is called the positron; it is identical to the electron except that it carries electrical and other charges of the opposite sign. When an electron collides with a positron, both particles may […]

Carbohydrates Facts and Health Info For Kids

Carbohydrates are not technically hydrates of carbon; structurally it is more accurate to view them as polyhydroxy aldehydes and ketones. The carbohydrates (saccharides) are divided into four chemical groupings: monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides. For example, grape sugar is the monosaccharide glucose, cane sugar is the disaccharide sucrose, and milk sugar is the disaccharide lactose (see […]

Temperature, Kinetic Energy, and Thermodynamics Resources

The word “temperature” is defined as the level of hotness or coldness that an environment or a body has. Temperature is measured with the use of a tool called a thermometer. The normal temperature of a human body is said to be 98.6 F or 37.0 C. Depending on how the word “temperature” is used, it can also mean a rather […]

Protein Structures that are Changed By Heating a Protein

Proteins are large molecules consisting of one or more chains of up to 20 different types of amino acids; these chains fold into a three-dimensional structure. Proteins are necessary for the body’s structure, regulation and functioning, serving as structural elements, enzymes, hormones and antibodies. The shape into which a protein naturally folds is called its “native state.” Such native […]

Facts about Temperature for Kids

Objects of low temperature are cold, while various degrees of higher temperatures are referred to as warm or hot. When a heat transfer path between them is open, heat spontaneously flows from bodies of a higher temperature to bodies of lower temperature. The flow rate increases with the temperature difference, while no heat will be […]

Facts For Kids about Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

Carbon dioxide (chemical formula CO2) is a colorless, odorless gas vital to life on Earth. Carbon dioxide exists in the Earth’s atmosphere as a trace gas at a concentration of about 0.04 percent (400 ppm) by volume. Natural sources include volcanoes, hot springs and geysers and it is freed from carbonate rocks by dissolution in water and acids. Since carbon dioxide is soluble in water, it […]

Facts about Velocity for Kids

Speed describes only how fast an object is moving, whereas velocity gives both how fast and in what direction the object is moving. If a car travels at 60 km/h, its speed is known. To have a constant velocity, an object must have a constant speed and motion in a constant direction. The scalar absolute […]
