There are many things that are commonly known about the human body and its inner workings, but what about facts that are not so known? If you think you carry all the information there could possibly be about the subject, you might want to sit down and reconsider this previous belief. Below are ten weird facts about the human body for your enjoyment.
1. The brain is actually roughly 80% water.
It may be hard to believe, but it’s not just that pink or gray lump in your head that you and others might have assumed it was previously. Because of the fact that water plays such a large part of its make, it is therefore vital that you stay hydrated at all times. On particularly hot days, be sure to drink a lot of water. Not only will you be keeping moisture in your body, but your brain will benefit, as well.
2. If you have ever worried about having a heart attack, make sure that the day you do your worrying is not a Monday.
Why is this so? Because studies have shown that people are more likely to have heart attacks on Monday than any other day of the week. These results can come from several factors, including the stress of starting a new work week, and attending parties that involved excessive drinking over the weekend. In other words, the hatred for Mondays that rests in society is actually more effective on your health than you might have thought.
3. Babies have more bones than any person of an older age on Earth.
The body structure of an adult may be made up of two hundred and six bones, but a baby will carry three hundred bones. It may seem like it should be the reverse, or that such a thing should not be possible, but the facts remain. As the baby ages, the bones in their body eventually come to form together with other bones. This creates a network of fewer but stronger bones. Additionally, and strangely enough, babies are also born without knee caps. These caps do not grow in until they reach their toddler years.
4. Ear wax is actually good for you and the state of your health.
Many people would like to believe that ear wax is unattractive, disgusting, and an annoyance for otherwise clean ears. On the contrary, having little or no ear wax would actually be a dangerous concept. The wax inside the ear actually works as a coating to protect the body from insects, bacteria, dirt and other nasty particles. So remember, overusing cotton swabs and other ear cleaners will do more harm than good in the long run.
5. In order to survive, getting enough sleep is much more important than getting enough food.
You may believe that not eating anything is more dangerous; however, the human body is able to go about one to two months without any edibles at all, depending on their body mass when they started. Not receiving a decent amount of sleep will lead to many health problems. Not only could the person begin to hallucinate, but they will also lose their ability to concentrate and perform daily tasks. Too much lack of sleep could reach a hazardous, even deadly level. Keep this in mind the next time you decide to study all night.
6. Have you ever helped yourself to a large and hearty meal, particularly during the holiday season?
The answer, for many people, would be yes. But did you know that eating an excess of food can dampen your ability to hear? The next time you and your friends decide to partake in dinner and a movie, make sure you don’t help yourself to that third plate of spaghetti. If you do, you won’t be able to hear the movie very well, and that is no fun for anyone.
7. No matter what you may try, very few things can destroy hair.
Though it may be thin and small, appearing as fragile as a wet piece of paper, it is actually quite strong. Save for fire, nothing natural can break a strand of hair in half. It will not even react to several chemicals and acids. Here is something else to ponder: hair has been found on mummies, proving its will to fight the course of time.
8. Humans are the only living beings that can cry as the result of emotions.
Maybe you dropped a favorite toy and it broke into several pieces. Or, perhaps the local deli is out of your favorite sandwich ingredients. Anything that makes you feel happy, sad, and so on, you can express through tears. For any other animal, this is not possible in the least.
9. No matter what the genes may dictate, all babies are born with blue eyes.
Some might find this mysterious, but the science behind this phenomenon is associated with what is called pigment melanin. The melanin in a baby’s eyes do not develop right away; with time, the color of the eyes will transform into its true form.
10. If you or someone you know has been suffering from bad dreams, you may want to check the thermostat.
When a person sleeps in a room that is cold, they will be more likely to experience nightmares. Nobody can say why this occurs, and scientists have yet to reach a conclusion. In any case, if you want to have good dreams, consider reaching for an extra blanket.
