The Periodic Table: Atomic Numbers and Symbols

The periodic table is the most important chemistry references there is, and is used in almost every chemistry class in schools all over the world. It arranges all the known elements that make up the universe in an informative array from left to right and top to bottom in order of increasing atomic number. How many elements are there? Currently, there are 109 known elements. The different rows of elements are called periods. The period number of an element signifies the highest energy level an electron in that element occupies. Using the data in the periodic table scientists, students, teachers and others can extract information concerning individual elements to learn more about the world and the things in it. Below you will find the list of elements, their symbol and their atomic number (The number of protons in an atom. Each element is uniquely defined by its atomic number).
